科學有什麼用?

從事純科學研究的，就像讀哲學、社會學的人，經常會被人問到一個問題，”What’s the point of all these?”

因為，這些學問，好像都沒有用。

最近讀到一些科學家對該問題的個人見解，且看能否為我們提供答案。

Tara Shears, “science is an adventure.”

Susan Blackmore, “knowing how the world really works.”

Lee Turnpenny, “science, like art, surprises, delights and moves us”

Marcus du Sautoy, “we are living in the scientific age”

Martin Robbins, “an understanding of science is vital to an understanding of politics.”

Jacob Aron, “without science, there would be no computers, no internet, and no blogging”

這幾個科學家說的，有從個人求知享受出發，有從客觀環境解釋，也有從其實際功效來看。

對求知慾強的人而言，根本就不需要原因；但如果你本來就對這些抽象的概念不感興趣的話，給你什麼理由都不足以令你愛上它。

科學對他們的唯一意義，可能就是新科技改善了人類的生活。三十年前，我們又怎會想像到今天每個人手上都拿著一部電話，可上網可看電影什麼的；又那會想到什麼微創手術，什麼基因改造。

可是，科學不等同科技。科學是原則，科技是應用，雖相關，卻是兩碼子的事。

量子物理是科學，原子彈是科技。

Adrian Gaylard說，”one of the most beautiful things about science is that it equips you to think for yourself”

其實教育本身就不只是教授知識，而是教人思考，不獨科學專美。

話説回來，我們是否必須要問這個問題？我們能否不再去問有什麼用，而只是專心的去享受知識帶來的喜悦。
